Is your aerial digital?
If you live in an area which can pick up freeview, that is not to say you can receive it. You may well need an aerial upgrade to do so. It is impossible for us to say if you have adequate signal with out doing a site survey. Generally if you live in a strong signal area you might find your old aerial fine, otherwise you will probably find yourself needing a new aerial. New aerials are designed for digital and generally have more elements than your old aerial, increasing the level of signal (known as dB).

The other option is to by new TV, all new TV's should have freeview built-in (if not it is likely to be an old model) any shop assistant should be able help you pick the correct TV.
